Paul Graham talks about the danger of putting too many checks on software development work - higher costs coupled with reduced performance and motivation from skilled workers. He suggests that when putting checks and procedures in place, an organization should always consider the accompanying costs. For example, if a company insists on verifying the solvency of all its suppliers, the cost to the organization is access to excellent suppliers who fall *just* short of the bar, as well suppliers that cannot/will not invest extra resources into the verification process.
